Recent Hartford HealthCare research found that among Connecticut residents who have traveled to New York City for their own medical care, 92% missed or rearranged work, family or personal time to get there.

On their most recent trip, 57% spent four or more hours away from home, and 79% made two or more separate trips for the same medical issue or course of care.

More than half (51%) missed or rearranged a full or partial workday, and 35% missed time with children or family.

More than a third (37%) said traveling home after a procedure, treatment or significant appointment made their physical recovery more difficult.

Hartford HealthCare is sharing the findings as part of its new Care Close to Home initiative in Fairfield County, which aims to help residents understand the full time commitment of traveling to Manhattan for care and the options available closer to home.

Hartford HealthCare has 127 locations across Fairfield County, offering services from primary and virtual care to orthopedics, heart and vascular care, cancer care, neuroscience and behavioral health.
