Stamford Health became the first hospital in the United States to treat patients with FUSMobile's Neurolyser XR, a noninvasive focused ultrasound system for chronic low back pain, at its Tully Health Center.
Neurolyser XR uses focused ultrasound, guided by X-ray imaging, to treat small nerves in the lower back that can be a source of chronic pain. Unlike conventional radiofrequency ablation, the treatment is delivered from outside the body, without inserting needles or probes to reach the targeted nerves. The system directs ultrasound energy to a precise point, heating and destroying the targeted nerve while energy passing through surrounding tissue remains much lower.
Arik Hananel, MD, CEO of FUSMobile, said, "Bringing Neurolyser XR into a hospital setting is an important milestone for FUSMobile and for the continued adoption of noninvasive focused ultrasound in interventional pain medicine. We are proud that Stamford Health is the first hospital in the United States to offer this technology to its patients, and we congratulate Dr. Wellisch and the entire Stamford Health team on completing their first treatment."
Dr. Ofer Wellisch, who leads Stamford Health's Division of Pain Medicine, performed the hospital's first treatment on August 18, 2026. Wellisch is also part of the Hospital for Special Surgery Spine Center with Stamford Health and the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Neuroscience Continuum.
"I am proud of our institution and its commitment to innovation and getting the most effective and safest treatments to patients, demonstrated by our participation in the pivotal clinical trial that led to FDA approval for this technology," said Wellisch. "This offering will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many of our patients who suffer chronic, debilitating back pain."
The installation follows U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorization of Neurolyser XR in November 2025 and marks another step in the system's U.S. commercialization; the technology is also used internationally, with patients treated in multiple countries. The procedure was performed at Tully Health Center, part of Stamford Health's network of outpatient and specialty care facilities.
Ellen Komar, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, said, "Stamford Health is committed to bringing innovative technologies and treatment options to the patients and communities we serve. We are proud to be the first hospital in the United States to introduce Neurolyser XR and to support our physicians in expanding access to innovative, noninvasive approaches to patient care."
Stamford Health is a nonprofit independent health care system serving Fairfield County, with more than 4,100 employees delivering care through its 305-bed Stamford Hospital, 40 medical group offices, and a growing number of ambulatory locations. FUSMobile develops the Neurolyser family of systems, providing noninvasive alternatives to conventional needle-based pain procedures.
"The integration of Neurolyser XR into Stamford Hospital's Pain Center and neuroscience service line demonstrates successful utilization of the technology in an integrated medical center and hospital system." said Ron Aginsky, President and Co-founder of FUSMobile. "We are proud to partner with Stamford Health in our shared effort to expand access to this noninvasive care. We are deeply committed to standing alongside Dr. Wellisch and his team as they introduce this advanced treatment option to patients who need it most."
